The skills section should be organized and honest. Grouping helps:

Do not overload education with unrelated coursework after you have stronger work experience.

What to remove before adding more

Most resumes do not need more content first. They need better focus.

Remove generic responsibilities that every engineer could claim:

  • Wrote clean code.
  • Fixed bugs.
  • Worked in Agile.
  • Collaborated with team members.
  • Participated in code reviews.

Use this rule before adding any keyword:

If asked about this term in an interview, can I explain where I used it, what I did, what tradeoffs existed, and what
happened as a result?

If the answer is yes, the keyword belongs somewhere. If the answer is “only from a tutorial,” it may belong in a project but not a core skills list. If the answer is no, leave it out.

For acronyms, include both the acronym and the full phrase when helpful. For example, “CI/CD” and “continuous integration,” “SLO” and “service-level objective,” or “RBAC” and “role-based access control.” Do this naturally, not as a hidden dictionary.

For variations, use the language from the job description if it matches your experience.   • The headline matches the target role direction.
  • The summary names the most relevant technical themes.
  • The skills section is grouped and honest.
  • The first third of the resume contains the strongest fit evidence.
  • Important job-description terms appear in context.
  • Every major keyword is supported by a bullet, project, or credential.
  • Bullets show action, technical context, and result.
  • The resume avoids tables, text boxes, images, and hidden text.
  • Contact information is readable as normal text.
  • Links are accurate and useful.
  • The PDF is selectable and visually clean.
  • The resume does not claim tools, seniority, ownership, or metrics you cannot defend.

The first mistake is using one resume for every job. A base resume is useful, but the submitted version should emphasize the role’s actual needs.

The second mistake is stuffing the skills section. A skills section with fifty tools does not create trust. It makes the reader wonder which tools you can actually use.

The third mistake is hiding important work inside vague bullets. “Improved performance” is not enough. Say which flow, service, query, page, or pipeline improved and how you know.
